Walt’s Watering Service keeps Oakley blooming! Owner Walter Baesler waters the flowers growing in whiskey barrel planters, mostly located along Oakley’s Center Avenue but also a few scattered throughout the city.
They are all privately owned and each potential customer must be individually contacted to sign up for the watering service. Walter’s DSNWK job coach helps him sign up customers as well as bill them monthly. He works from Memorial weekend until the end of September, watering all the planters at least 3 times per week, always including one watering over the weekend. He charges from $1.50 to $5 per week, depending on the number of planters a customer has. Originally Walter ran his route on foot, hauling buckets of water in a utility wagon, but the service outgrew the wagon. Now his mother Pat Hammond assists Walter, hauling two water tanks in the back of her van.
