Sensory integration is the process of the brain organizing & interpreting experiences such as; touch, movement, body awareness, sight, and sound. For most people, effective sensory integration occurs naturally in the normal course of development and happens automatically and unconsciously, requiring no effort or attention on our part.
For others, the sensory process can become disordered or fragmented, in which case normal integration does not happen. When sensory input involves either too much or not enough stimulation for normal integration to occur, the effect is a sensory processing disorder in which normal learning, development, and behavior cannot take place. However, once these disorders are identified, they can be treated through an intervention program designed to strengthen the individual’s need areas in order to promote learning, communication, and relationships.
Sensory processing disorders affect many people, but is most prevalent in individuals with some type of disability. DSNWK has a specially trained Sensory Team that evaluates and assesses sensory processing disorders and works with the Life Plan teams to develop individualized programs, treatments, and activities. DSNWK provides evaluation, program-planning, hands-on training, and ongoing consultation for individuals receiving services.
