Field Of Dreams

DSNWK's Role | Getting Started | Questions | Business Plan |Location/Contacts | Individual Businesses

On a farm northeast of Hays, you’ll see crops growing. But there is more than just food growing here. This farm also grows dreams. Several men have banded together to operate a business of their own-the Field of Dreams Produce Farm. The men looked to work in the community but had difficulty locating jobs that suited them. The Field of Dreams idea gave them employment that they enjoy. Ted Nuttle, farm manager, helped get them started, and help the men work and sell the produce.
The owners do all the planting, watering, fertilizing, and harvesting of the produce. The men raise a wide variety of produce. One crop that is meeting with great acceptance in the community is the pumpkin patch. Patrons are invited to come out to the patch and select the pumpkin that is “just right.” The men market their produce in a variety of ways. They utilize the local Farmers Market, at garden shops, and at the farm. The men will be erecting their own produce stand at the garden and are looking forward to having the public access their produce right where it is grown.

Person Holding ProduceDuring the winter months, the men provide snow removal, and maintain and repair their equipment. They also take on any outside work they can locate doing everything from lawn mower and snowblower tuneup, to auto body and heavy equipment repair. The motto for the Field of Dreams Produce Farm and Repair Shop is “No job too small or too big, but some may be too big. We will try almost anything.”

The men have recently started doing custom tilling for area gardeners. They are available for a wide variety of services and are willing to take on most any job. They advertise their products and services on the local cable channel and through the use of flyers, but their best advertisment comes by word of mouth of many satisfied customers.

Many community members have either donated or have given the unlimited use of many items, such as large tillage equipment, that the men can now effectively use. Through the generosity of many, the Field of Dreams is inching closer to becoming a Field of “Fulfilled” Dreams.
