Safety Reminder
July 13, 2010
Occasionally safety related concerns are brought to my attention and it provides a great opportunity to share those with staff throughout the agency. Supervisors, please include a discussion on these safety concerns at your next staff meeting and take appropriate action to ensure the homes and offices are in compliance with the safety concerns listed below.
- The use of an extension cord for temporary or permanent use is prohibited by the Fire Marshal. If you need an extension cord or extra outlets, use a power strip.
- Never leave portable heaters plugged into wall outlets when not in use.
- When using a portable heater never plug them into a power strip, always plug into a wall outlet (unplug when not in use).
- Never piggyback power strips - don't plug a power strip into another power strip. All power strips should be plugged into a wall outlet.
- Electrical outlets within 6 feet of a kitchen sink or bathroom sink need to be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets. (Supervisors submit a Maintenance Work Order if you need to have a current outlet replaced with a GFCI outlet.) Below is an example of a GFCI Outlet.
